Well nobody tried to guess why I was going to Paris last week (typical! lol). I suppose since the press days where happening you thought I was attending one of them. Well I wasn’t! My friend, Ann, decided at the last minute to see Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in Paris and since that band is like a drug, always leaving you to want more, I joined her! We are actually an awesome team. Ann found the tickets on eBay since Le Zénith was sold out, Muriel bought them and I took care of booking the train and hotel. It wasn’t a piece of cake to find an affordable one at such short notice but I think I did well. I picked L’Hôtel de Paris which is basically 5 minutes by foot from Le Zénith. You can’t beat that! For €85 we had a room for three persons with the bathroom inside the room (always a plus!). It was simple but just what we need to spend the night… and it was a very short night anyway!
Hôtel de Paris
Avenue Jean Jaurès 188
Basic acommodation but clean! I wouldn’t suggest booking it through their official site as you have to give your credit card by email, but it’s available on Booking, Expedia,…
We left Brussels around noon, arrived at Paris at 2pm, checked into our hotel and headed to Le Zénith. It was really super close. A few people were already waiting as well as a few familiar faces. I will spare you a paragraph about the cold and how I couldn’t feel my feet anymore, but it was REALLY cold. They opened the door at 6pm. Also three ticket checks? Seriously? I found the staff a little rude shouting as we ran to the stage: “Oh yes run because it’s already SO full!” Whatever.
Shilpa Ray played first. Again love her voice and her music, but I really wish she had a band with her. Les Colettes were next and I think they managed better to grab the audience’s attention. Both bands are a great fit with the Bad Seeds anyway.
Now I am warning you this is going to sound a little but like we are crazy fangirls, but really, we are nice. :) The night before in Antwerp, Deo, who is doing most of the tour, had a chat with Nick Cave and mentionned that for a few of us it would be our last show of the tour, and we would all (that’s 6 of us don’t worry) wear something gold. Nick replied: “Do you want me to wear my gold shirt?” He has that gold lamé shirt that he wore during the Koko concert in Camden and it’s just epic. I thought that was just hilarious and we were all wondering if he would wear it or not… Well he did! I think our smiles couldn’t have been wider.

We knew he still had the flu but I don’t think most people would have noticed it. It always amazes me how he can gives the best of himself even when sick. I need to remember that when I don’t want to come out of bed in the morning! The Bad Seeds, as usual, were also in top form. They really are an amazing band.

At the beginning I felt like many people in the first two rows didn’t really know how to act when he came close to grab onto somebody. I saw him reject a lot of hands who were probably pulling instead of holding him. They eventually got the message. He played a lot with the audience encouraging them to come closer and touch him especially during Higgs Boson Blues which really comes to live when performed live.

I thought the whole concert was solid and it’s really hard to pick favourites although I thought The Mercy Seat was really intense… then again it always is. He dedicated Deanna to Muriel (long story) which was just so sweet, and during the song he quickly came over to touch our golden group. I guess it was his way of aknowledging us. In any case it was very thoughtful. He also added: “come on be happy” at the end of Deanna which we are hoping it was for us as well.
And yes it’s on video so we can now watch that over and over again… which I of course never do… Ahem.
I also got “the shoulder experience”. Meaning that after putting his foot on the guy in front of me, his knee ended up on my shoulder during part of Stagger Lee. That was crazy too and I am glad he thought I’d be tough enough to hold him! That man is strong, don’t be fooled by his slim figure!
After the day we went to the stage door and waited till a little after 1am. Unfortunately a few cars/vans came out but none stopped. He probably left earlier or something which is totally understandable. They gave a great concert and that’s what matters. I will get a picture one day, there is still time! We did see Eric Cantona though!
Anyway these past weeks have been absolutely amazing and again I am so happy to have met so many wonderful fans. It’s crazy! Everybody is so nice and easy going… and the concerts aren’t bad either! If you’re looking for a journalist to follow the next tour, I am your man! Well woman! The reviews on French blogs/mags were so awful… Not about the quality of the concert, but they got so many facts wrong.
