Concert – Boy George & Day One – Ancienne Belgique

I am a bit too young to have known about Boy George and Culture Club when they were on top of the charts, but like many people I do know all their hits because they’ve truly not aged. Ten years ago, I saw him in the musical Taboo which was based on his life. He didn’t play his own role but the one of Leigh Bowery, a very important artist in the 80s/90s. Anyway he was fantastic and I really wanted to see him perform again. Ten years later, he is back on stage with a new album and a new (tamer) look.

The first act was Day One. I didn’t know them but apparently they took part in the Flemish reality show Eurosong which designated a singer for the Eurovision. They weren’t bad but to be honest it’s really not my kind of music.

Gros coup de coeur pour Church of the Poison Mind et It Ain’t Me Babe en version acoustique.

Boy George and his musicians came on stage at 9pm and transported us back to the 80s during 90 minutes. The setlist was a really good mix of hits and new songs, with a few covers. It did get a little awkward when Boy George nicely complained that people stop filming him all the time and just enjoy the show. But then someone in the middle of the audience continued and with flash! So he jumped in the crowd to have a little chat with the guy! When he came back on stage, he actually walked out of it for a few minutes. The musicians didn’t quite know what to do but didn’t seem too surprised about his reaction. I really love to have a few pictures as a souvenir, but I will never understand people who watch the whole concert through their cellphones. Anyway the songs that stood out the most for me were Church of the Poison Mind and It Ain’t Me Babe en version acoustique.

Concert: Rufus Wainwright & Lucy Wainwright-Roche – Cirque Royal

English version below.

If there is something I like just as much as the sales, it’s getting an email to announce that one of my favourite artists is coming to Belgium. A few months ago, it’s Rufus Wainwright who announced a tour to promote his “best of” album Vibrate. The concert was taking place at Cirque Royal… Even if the venue has seen better days, it’s still a nice one due to the fact that it’s not too big. For this accoustic tour, Rufus is joined by his half-sister, Lucy Wainwright-Roche. She opened for him and just like the rest of her family, she is a beautiful voice and a fun sense of humour. There isn’t much the say about Rufus except that he was amazing as always. I am a recent fan (you can check my review of the first time I saw him here) and it was love at first sight… well first listen at least! His voice is so rich that even though he switched between piano and guitar, he could do without them!

During those 2h, Rufus covered most of is best of with an amazing acapella version of Candles.

He always had to stage a little something special for his new track Me & Liza, his sister came back on staged dressed as Liza Minnelli… As you can see from the picture, it wasn’t an elaborate costume. Someone in the audience asked if she was dressed as Robert Smith! Hilarious.

Anyway if you want to get into Rufus music, I highly recommend the “best of” album. I caved in and bought the deluxe set (yes I still buy cds) and it’s really nice. The second cd is full of live tracks with some of them from the amazing concert Live at the Den in New York (also available on dvd), as well as few postcard and a booklet with various quotes.

Concert: Blixa Bargeld & Teo Theardo – AB Brussels

Last concert for the month and I kept it in the Bad Seeds family! I went to see Blixa Bargeld with my concert buddy Ann! ;) Blixa Bargeld is of course best known for being the guitarist of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, but he has an impressive career behind him. To be honest I didn’t really follow him when he left the band but I had heard snippets of his new album, Still Smiling, and really liked it. The album was done in collaboration with Teo Theardo and it’s really a little gem. Since the concert was part of Autumn Falls at AB Brussels, we also caught DAAU and Esmerine beforehand, and were quite surprised to be able to sit front row! I was really impressed by Esmerine, really amazing band.

Blixa & co arrived on stage at 9pm and before greeting us in a few languages et apologized for his “cold of massive proportion”. He had arrived by train instead of plane which took him 7h. Seriously that’s dedication. I don’t know the exact setlist since I am not familiar (yet) with all the songs but it was beautiful. His performance, well their performance really, is super professional, and Blixa has a wicked sense of humor. Just as Nick Cave, he is incredibly charmismatic and it’s such a joy to see him perform. Also Teo Theardo is an incredible guitarist and the guy seriously has a smile on his face during the whole concert!

A few funny things he mentionned was writing the album half the time in his hotel room in Italy while drinking Aperol Spritz, and the other in his kitchen while thinking of Mae West! He said that he googles a lot of things when he writes and that this time he used Wikipedia a lot… not unline a certain other Bad Seed… I am sure he said some other hilarious things, but it’s all a bit of  a blur. I think I have a concert hangover after the past month, but it’s been incredible!

Oh and I also really loved that during the song Defenestrazioni, you can hear a journalist asking various questions one of them being: “Are you going back to play with Nick?”  The way Blixa reacts to each of them is just hilarious.

One of the highlights of the show was definitely their cover of Crimson & Clover. So theatrical!
