This Tuesday I had the chance to see Nicole Atkins in La Rotonde at Le Botanique in Brussels. I had never been in that venue so I didn’t expect such a small room! It made the atmosphere really special and intimate. The band opening for them was Sonnfjord, a really nice pop/rock band. The lead singer really has a beautiful voice. I really enjoyed their set and they did an awesome cover of Jolene by Dolly Parton.
It wasn’t sold out so we were all sitting with a big gap between the stage and us. Nicole Atkins actually arrived and started an accoustic version of Neptune City (her hometown in New Jersey – USA) right in front of us. She said the set up was perfect for a kumbaya!
It was a little awkward so after a song, she urged people to come standing in front of the stage. I have to say the audience seemed a little shy, but my friend, Anne and I, didn’t think twice about it and stood for the whole show. The set was fantastic. Nicole Atkins is a fantastic singer with a great sense of humor. She ended with Crying by Roy Orbinson which again was very special as she performed it in the audience.
Anne and I had seen her opening for Nick Cave in The USA last Summer and she remembered the “Nick Cave Posse” it was pretty funny. She was at the merchandise stand at the end of the show, so we exchanged a few words, hugged and she signed the poster I’d just bought. Another fantastic evening!
